
MAVR · MAGNETOTHERAPEUTIC DEVICE
IN 1982, FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW DIRECTION IN THE SURGERY OF TRAUMATIC INJURIES OF LARGE JOINTS COMPLICATED BY PURULENT INFECTION USING MAGNETOTHERAPY, AS WELL AS FOR THE CREATION OF NEW TREATMENT METHODS AND THEIR BROAD IMPLEMENTATION IN HEALTHCARE PRACTICE, PROF. V.V. SERDYUK WAS AWARDED THE HONORARY TITLE OF HONORED INVENTOR OF UKRAINE. HIS INVENTIONS WERE USED IN THE TREATMENT OF MANY THOUSANDS OF PATIENTS, INCLUDING WOUNDED AFGHAN WAR VETERANS. PROF. V.V. SERDYUK IS THE AUTHOR OF 40 INVENTIONS.

The high incidence of purulent complications in trauma practice, especially in open fractures, including gunshot fractures, against the background of antibiotic therapy that was not always effective, attracted the attention of many physicians to this problem. The doctoral dissertation of Prof. V.V. Serdyuk was devoted to the treatment of the most severe intra-articular fractures and their infectious complications. For the treatment of such patients, Prof. V.V. Serdyuk, together with engineers, developed special magnetotherapeutic devices of the "PDMT" and "MAVR" series. As a result of experimental and clinical studies, new effective methods were developed for the prevention and treatment of purulent complications after surgical interventions, as well as diseases of the musculoskeletal system. These inventions are protected by USSR authors' certificates and by patents of Russia and Ukraine. The high therapeutic properties of magneto-acoustic therapy, based on pronounced stimulation of cellular and humoral immunity, served as the basis for its broad implementation in surgical and therapeutic clinical practice.
Virtually all existing global clinical experience in the use of magnetic fields in medicine, including his own experience, was analyzed and systematized in the monograph by Prof. V.V. Serdyuk, published in 2004 in Kyiv, Ukraine, under the title "Magnetotherapy. Past. Present. Future." The book is structured as a reference manual and contains brief information on 264 Candidate and Doctoral dissertations, 230 monographs, 77 thematic collections, and 295 authors' certificates and patents revealing the mechanism of action, as well as the experimental and clinical aspects of magnetotherapy. The list of cited literature includes more than 2,850 publications from countries around the world.
In fact, this book is the first and only publication of its kind devoted to all aspects of experimental and clinical magnetotherapy. It may be of considerable interest not only to physicians of various specialties, but also to medical personnel working in physiotherapy departments, medical students, medical device design engineers, and others.
Researchers from the Rostov Research Institute of Oncology made a significant contribution to the study of the mechanism of action of magnetic fields in the treatment of lung cancer: L.Kh. Garkavi in 1968, E.B. Kvakina and M.A. Ukolova in 1969. In 1977, A.K. Pankov and co-authors received USSR Authors' Certificate No. 522688 for a "Method for the Treatment of Malignant Tumors." They established that local application of a magnetic field to the tumor area increases the body's nonspecific antitumor resistance.
Later, while working on his doctoral dissertation, Prof. V.V. Serdyuk conducted experimental studies on laboratory animals. The results confirmed the conclusions of his predecessors that local magnetotherapy stimulates cellular and humoral immunity. As a result, a method for the prevention and treatment of infected wounds was developed and subsequently used in the treatment of more than 9,000 wounded internationalist soldiers in Afghanistan.
In the dissertation of Dr. A.I. Popov, 11th Hospital of Odesa, carried out under the supervision of Prof. I.G. Herzen and Prof. V.V. Serdyuk, it was established that magnetic fields of specific parameters stimulate the remodeling of bone allografts with restoration of red bone marrow. USSR Authors' Certificate No. 1171042. Cadaveric bone became living bone.
This invention allowed the authors to treat a large group of children from the Chernobyl zone who had severe immunodeficiency and to obtain a positive therapeutic effect. Local magnetotherapy was performed using portable and stationary devices designed by Prof. V.V. Serdyuk. In this way, a method was developed for the treatment of immunodeficiency, in particular radiation-induced leukopenia.
The magnet was used by ancient physicians, including Galen, Avicenna, and Paracelsus. Scientists of the present century have determined that magnetotherapy changes the permeability of cell membranes and improves metabolism. In the area exposed to the magnetic field, the activation of flows of various substances in different directions, either toward or away from the magnet, increases the rate of chemical reactions and enhances the metabolism of oxygen, calcium, and other substances. This also improves metabolic processes.
Blood vessels located in the area targeted by the magnetic field dilate, which helps normalize tissue blood supply and, consequently, oxygen delivery.
Professor V.V. Serdyuk considers it possible and necessary to use magneto-acoustic stimulation in the treatment of leukemia, especially in children and adolescents. The method proposed by Prof. V.V. Serdyuk is aimed at actively stimulating the body's own reserves. The action of the magnetic field is completely harmless and may be used as an adjunct to the main treatment.
