Professor V.V. Serdyuk

Serdyuk Valentyn Viktorovich was born in Mykolayiv (Ukraine) in 1942 and moved to Odessa together with his family in 1944. Here he received his primary education and in 1966 graduated with honors from Odessa Medical Institute. From 1966 to 1970 he worked as a general surgeon. In 1970, after six months of training in Kiev Institute of Postgraduate Education (based on Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics), became qualified in orthopedic surgery and traumatology. From 1971 to 1974 — postgraduate trainee of the department of traumatology and orthopedics of the Pirogov Odessa Medical Institute. After getting his PhD degree on the treatment of chronic Achilles tendon injuries, he obtained an assistant position in the department.

In 1982 he received the honorary title "Honored Inventor of Ukraine" for introducing his scientific developments (medical equipment, tools and new methods of treatment) across the Soviet Union. He was awarded one gold, two silver and two bronze medals of Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR.

The doctoral thesis was on one of the most difficult problems of traumatology — treatment of open and intraarticular fractures complicated by the development of purulent infection. In 1986 Serdyuk was given the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences, and in 1991 — Professor of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of Odessa National Medical University and counselor of the 3rd trauma unit of Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 11 (clinical base of the department).

He is the author of 250 scientific works, including two scientific discoveries in vertebrology, 6 books, two study guides on traumatology and orthopedics for foreign students including English versions, 45 inventions and more than 75 rationalization proposals. In 1993 he was elected Academician of the Ukrainian International Academy of Original Ideas. Professor Serdyuk is the author of a new direction in traumatology — the use of electromagnetic therapy in treatment and prevention of wound infection. For this purpose he designed special devices, brought to serial production in the USSR and Ukraine, protected by author certificates and patents.

The last 20 years of work were devoted to in-depth study of the problem of treating idiopathic scoliosis associated with spinal pain syndrome. As a result, he accumulated personal experience of successful conservative treatment of more than 9,500 such patients, described in the monograph "Body Asymmetry. Scoliosis. Spinal Pain Syndrome. A New View of an Old Problem," Donetsk, 2010. Thus, not only the obligate causes of idiopathic scoliosis were discovered, but also the regularity of development of diseases of internal organs in children and adults based on spinal deformities forming in early childhood.

Based on the above discoveries, a new highly effective conservative method of treating idiopathic scoliosis was developed, which was reported at the World Congress on issues of scoliosis in London (2011), the report "Idiopathic Scoliosis. Mechanisms of Its Development," and also in the same year in Prague (Czech Republic) at the World Congress of Orthopedic Surgeons and Traumatologists, the report "A New Understanding of the Etiology and Pathogenesis of Idiopathic Scoliosis. Perspectives of Its Successful Treatment" (et al.).

• Conservative treatment of patients with idiopathic scoliosis and spinal pain syndrome.
• Conservative treatment of diseases arising as consequences of spinal deformities (infertility, leukemia, mastopathy, diabetes, bronchial asthma, obesity, psoriasis).
• Use of local magneto-acoustics in the treatment of immunosuppressed patients and for prevention and treatment of infectious complications in diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system.
• Reconstructive surgery of limb deformities.
